Anyone have any of these collecting dust and taking up space at your house?
Of course yours are much cleaner and don't have water spots on them. (note to self: buy more rinse aid) Moving along...I have a handful of these that I After I'd made the first, I decided to switch it up and try another with twine. I'll show you both and see what you think about them. The wire handles were made the same way for both. I almost had to name this post "Crafting With Carlos" because I realized that as I was taking pics, I was including our turtle, Carlos into the shots. He's a happy crafter, so let's just go with it, yes?
Cut yourself two pieces of wire about 15" or 16" - enough to wrap around the neck of the vase and twist together and meet at the top to form a handle. I held a piece of wire on (in the pic above) "top" and "bottom" side of the neck and then connected them with a twist at the "left" and "right" side of the neck.
I continued to twist each side until the met at the top and wrapped the two sections of wire together to form a handle.
Cut a piece of burlap to a length that will wrap around the neck of the vase 1 1/2 times. Find the middle thread in the piece and pull to scrunch and ruffle the fabric. Secure around the neck of the vase with a couple stiches or hotglue or the less tasteful way, which was my way, with a stapler. (I know, I'm a classy crafter).
After seeing this one, I decided I liked the clean, clear glass combined with the rough texture of the burlap, but wasn't sold on the ruffle, so I tried a simpler version with twine. I just wrapped twine around the length of the neck of the vase covering the wire.
and because it's bad luck to leave a candle wick unlit...
Here she is in action...
So whatcha think? Burlap?
or Twine?
I ran out of wire and we're on a spending freeze for a few days, so I'll have to finish my other lanterns up later. I can't wait to see what they all look like together, lit in the evening.
What have yall been making?
Oh, and I hope to be doing a little partying with these folks this week! Come join the fun!

I love the lantern idea! I have about 20 of those darn vases...they have a purpose!
That's a great idea! My favorite is the one with the twine. I might have to make me one or five of those!

The burlap one is extremely cute, but I absolutely Love the twine one! Great idea!!
Great idea! Love the twine. I'll have to give the idea shot. thanks for sharing. Visiting from Remodelaholic.
Very cute! I like them both, but would probably stick with the twine for mine. They look a little easier and nap time only lasts so long... I could probably get more done with the twine. Thanks so much for the idea. Visiting from Remodelaholic.
Great idea! I have only a million of these vases to do this with. And I love the twine the best!

Definitely Twine. Great idea.
I really like the simplicity of the twine. This is gorgeous and who would have guessed how frugal. I am definitely borrowing this idea. :)

Do the vase take the heat from the lit candle without breaking??? Anybody tried them being lit for an evening?
Charlene - great question! I have lit them many nights. I used tea lights, so they didn't produce much heat. A larger pillar candle might produce too much heat too close to the glass and cause breakage. My biggest challenge has been to remember to bring them under cover when it rains. All the best! :)
Love the twine one. Does the vase hold up to the heat of the candle? Also, if you don't have any vases around, you can pick them up in the dollar store.
I love this idea! How did you secure the twine so neat? Did you glue it, if so with what?

These are so cute! I have been looking for hanging candle lanterns but now I can just make some of my own since I have a ton of these scattered throughout the house! Thanks so much!
Thanks for this I've been looking for ways to start hanging candle lanterns and I loved this idea.

Great idea! I have so many vases ( collected for making glass totems). I just tore down an ugly lattice area but left the 3 posts with finals on top. I thought I would put lantern hooks. Now I can use your idea for some cool lanterns! I have a lot of small chain left from a wedding. Might try that instead of wire. Thanks for the idea!

I am going to a friend's birthday party in a couple weeks and I was trying to think of what to get her. She has talked about buying candle lanterns online before so I thought I would research some looks. These instructions are great and the final product is gorgeous, however, I don't have enough time to make this myself so I might just buy one for her.
